Signals after midnight
Late-night red lights and failed signals have local rules that still begin with a complete stop and a careful check.
A fixed red light from midnight to 5 a.m.
Stop completely first. Puerto Rico law then allows a driver to proceed only after taking due precautions and confirming that it is safe. This is not permission to roll through the light, and cross traffic may still have a green.
Flashing red or yellow
Treat a flashing red like PARE: make a full stop and yield before moving. At a flashing yellow, continue only with caution and be ready for traffic or pedestrians.
A dark or failed signal
Approach slowly and apply the right-of-way rules for an intersection without a signal. If two vehicles arrive together, the vehicle on the left yields to the vehicle on the right. Do not assume every failed light automatically becomes a four-way stop.
Posted signs still control
A NO VIRE EN ROJO sign remains a prohibition. Police directions, temporary controls, and lane arrows also take precedence over the general overnight rule.
